Managers and Team Support

Do Managers need to support their teams? How?

A Manager's basic role is to achieve business goals through his efforts, driving his team and by ensuring his team reaches the goals that they have been assigned.

Do not be led into thinking that managers "care" for you
as an individual, they are concerned more about you as a member of the team, which collectively can reach the team goal. Thus it is imperative for him to support his team and build competency in them to succeed. If his team succeeds,  he too succeeds.

Sadly, many managers are short sighted, and look at immediate results rather than long term solutions. Hence they come across as only interested in current results, rather than a team members problem.

There is a difference when it comes to Leaders. They are truly interested in team members, because its strong relationships that build a strong team. And strong relationships are built on Trust. Hence, if you see a manager being really looked up to by his team, being approached by his team for help with problems which are not related to work, rest assured that its a leader in the making, if not one already.

Managers can start supporting them by leading from the front, working with them, encouraging good practices, building technical and qualitative skills, appreciating good work, negating disruptive influences, creating internal opportunities for growth, being approachable for support, and building team spirit.
